Section 2305 of the 1994 Uniform Building Code states: All lumber, . . . fiberboard sheathing (when used structurally), . . . regulated by this chapter shall conform to the applicable standards or grading rules specified in this code and shall be so identified by the grade mark or a certification of inspection issued by an approved agency. The "applicable standards" are listed in Section 2303.1.4. Specifically, Section 4.6 lists ANSI/AHA A194.1, Cellulosic Fiber Insulating Board (Fiberboard). Note that the 1996 Accumulative Supplement to the UBC shows 4.6 as 4.8. International Bildrite is licensed to label structural and nonstructural products using 01 as the mill number. Bildrite further labels their structural products as "BRACERITE" for 1/2" and "BILDRITE" for 25/32". The nonstructural 1/2" regular sheathing is labeled "GRAYLITE". AHA is "an approved agency" based on ICBO ES report number AA-614. Louis W., Director of Technical Services American Fiberboard Association Based on ICBO Evaluation Service Report No. 3567-Section II.B, fiberboard sheathing which meets ANSI/AHA A194.1 requirements is an approved water-repellent panel sheathing as defined in UBC Section 1402, Item #4. Bildrite panel sheathing conforms to ANSI/AHA A194.1, and is considered an approved water-repellent sheathing. Therefore, a weather-resistive barrier required by UBC 1402.1 may be omitted over Bildrite panel sheathing. David K. Building Codes Representative

The
American Fiberboard Association represents U.S. producers of cellulosic
fiberboard sheathings. All of them produce sheathings recognized as being
water-repellent via their own Evaluation Reports and or ICBO ER 3567 issued
to the American Hardboard Association. If properly installed these water-repellent panels qualify as an exception to the code requirements that building paper must be used. The final factor in deciding to use building paper (or an equivalent) must take into consideration the siding to be applied over the sheathing Consult the siding manufacturer's instructions to determine if there are additional requirements calling for the use of building paper.
