How to Apply International Bildrite Fiberboard Sheathing |
|||||||||||||||||||||
| Introduction International Bildrite Sheathings are available in Regular 1/2" Graylite, Structural 1/2" Bracerite and Structural 25/32" Bildrite nominal thickness'. Depending on the thickness, the minimum application requirements vary slightly - see below. Storage Outside storage is recommended. Weather protection is not necessary except for extended periods of storage, but the sheathing should be off the ground. General Construction International Bildrite 1/2" Graylite Sheathing must be applied to framing members spaced no greater than 16" o.c.; 25/32" Bildrite may be applied over framing spaced up to 16" o.c. An effective sidewall vapor barrier, having a perm rating of one or less, should be utilized on the warm-in-winter side of the wall. Application Apply International Bildrite Fiberboard sheathing vertically over the framing members with all four edges falling over framing members, and with the imprinted surface exposed. A 1/8" gap should be left at all vertical and horizontal joints to allow for expansion and contraction. If sheathing is butted to trim members, like window and door frames, also leave a 1/8" gap. Provide nailing blocks where necessary for attachment of brackets, shutters, wires and other structural attachments. The sheathing should not be considered a nailing base. Fasten sheathing to intermediate framing members first, then along all edges. Place fasteners not less than 3/8" from all edges. Space fasteners 3" o.c. around all edges and 6" o.c. at intermediate framing members. Nails or Staples With 1/2" thick Bracerite and Graylite, use 11-gauge galvanized roofing nails with a minimum head diameter of 7/16" and a minimum shank length of 1-1/2", or use 6d common nails; staples must be 16-guage with a minimum crown of 7/16" and a minimum leg length of 1-1/2". With 25/32" thick Bildrite, increase the above sizes to 1-3/4" long roofing nails, 1-3/4" long stapling legs and 8d common nails. Staple crowns must run parallel with the framing members.
Corner Bracing All three national model building codes approve the use of 25/32" Bildrite Fiberboard and 1/2" Brace-Rite sheathings for sidewall racking strength without supplemental corner bracing, if properly applied. These model codes include the BOCA Basic/National Building Code, the ICBO Uniform Building Code and the SBCCI Standard Building Code. Building Paper International Bildrite Sheathings are considered, by ICBO, Evaluation Report #3567, to be "water repellent panel sheathings," and as such, do not require building paper or its equivalent, unless required by local building codes. Exterior Finish Application Siding: Apply the various horizontal lap sidings and vertical panel sidings directly over the sheathing. Nail through the sheathing into underlying framing members in accordance with the siding manufacturer's recommendations. All vertical joints should occur over framing members. Shingles: Provide 1" x 2" or larger wood framing strips over the sheathing at right angles to the framing members. Space the framing strips to accommodate shingle exposure and fasten the strips by nailing through the sheathing into framing. Masonry Veneer: Provide not less than a 1/2" air space between the masonry and the sheathing. Fasten metal wall ties for the masonry with nails driven through the sheathing into framing. Stucco: Place building paper under the stucco base. With self-furring stucco bases, apply self-furring wire or expanded metal lath directly over the sheathing, and secure by nailing or stapling through the sheathing into framing. For non-furring stucco bases, apply 1"x 2" wood strips along each framing member and over the sheathing for subsequent attachment of the metal lath. The wood strips must be nailed through sheathing into framing and the metal lath must be attached directly to the wood strips. Caution Sawing or sanding wood products can produce wood dust which can cause a flammable or explosive hazard. The following cautionary statement is appropriate for this product: Caution: Combustible - may smolder or burn if ignited. Wood dust may cause lung, upper respiratory tract, eye and skin irritation. Some wood species may cause dermatitis and/or allergic respiratory effects. The International Agency for Research or Cancer (IARC) has classified wood dust as a nasal carcinogen in humans.
